What to Expect During Your Adult Swim Lesson

Your safety and comfort are our absolute number one priority!

Before Class

Please check-in at the Front Desk when you arrive for class to record your attendance and receive class specific directions. If you have not been to our swim school before, please arrive a few minutes early so we can give you a tour of the facility, we would love to show you around and answer any questions!

If you have extra time before class starts, you can spend a few minutes checking out the lobby monitors for up-to-date information and announcements from the Gold Medal Swim School management team and owner, Mike Walker. Our friendly, lobby staff members are also always available to serve you and answer your questions!

When you are ready, head to our family-friendly changing room and get ready to swim! We provide stalls for your privacy in dressing, but please do not leave your belongings in a dressing stall at any time. There are hooks adjacent to the shower area and cubbies in the changing room to store your belongings during your lesson.

Proceed through the changing room door to the pool deck where you can wait for your class to begin and store your belongings. The instructor will invite you into the pool when it is time for the class.

A young child stands near an open cubicle in a modern changing room. The room has several stalls, cubby shelves, and round mirrors on the wall. The floor is tiled, and ceiling is decorated with hanging elements. A trash can and a bouquet of flowers are present on one shelf.

During Class

Relax. We believe to be successful at anything it is paramount to be relaxed and comfortable in your environment, and this especially true of swimming. We believe a safe and inviting environment optimizes instruction and allows our students to thrive. To that end we have created a state-of-the-art heated facility with a focus on the highest water quality, utilizing the DELL Ozone system, the same sanitation system used to treat bottled water. We monitor this process and chemical levels every 60 minutes during lessons. All pool water is completely filtered every 90 minutes and replaced every six days to provide our instructors and clients with the safest, cleanest, and most comfortable water in the Valley.

Have Fun and Enjoy the Process. It is also important to exercise patience, as sometimes our current abilities do not match up with our time frame and expectations. Always celebrate your accomplishments and enjoy the process.

If you need to use the restroom during class, we have a restroom located on the deck, next to the shower area and changing room door. Our bathrooms and changing areas are disinfected before and after each shift. Every evening, the entire facility is sanitized by a professional cleaning service. Your safety and comfort are our number one priority, please let us know if something has slipped by us.

A swimmer wearing a pink swim cap and pink goggles is swimming freestyle in a pool. The swimmer has her head slightly above water, and her right arm is extended forward. The water is clear and light blue.

After Class

We have a large, family-friendly shower area to rinse off after your lesson. If you would like, bring shampoo or body soap and enjoy a quick rinse. Swimsuits must remain on in the shower area.

Grab your towel and then proceed through the dressing room door to access our changing stalls and larger facility bathrooms.

A swim suit dryer and plastic bags for wet clothes are provided in our changing area for your convenience.

What Will You Be Learning?

A person is floating on their back in a swimming pool, wearing swim goggles, a swim cap, and a two-piece swimsuit. The pool has a multicolored tile pattern on the wall in the background.

Core Values

Gold Medal Swim School is built on a unique foundation of Five Core Values: Safety, Air Regulation, Relaxation, Body Position, and Propulsion. This foundation is introduced in Baby Swim and extends through to our Adult programming. No matter what level of swimmer you currently are, the Gold Medal Swim School Core Values will help elevate your swimming successes. To learn more about our Core Values, click here.

A person with dark hair is swimming in a pool, performing the front crawl stroke. Their right arm is extended forward in the water, and their face is partially submerged, creating ripples in the clear blue water.

Our Program

Our curriculum utilizes a layered approach and skills are mastered when they are performed successfully. Concepts and techniques are increasingly overlapped throughout our program to give you the foundation to achieve your swimming goals. This, however, takes time and practice. Consistent, high-quality repetition leads to mastery and builds a strong platform to launch both confident swimmers and great competitors.

Instructors follow structured lesson plans comprised of skills and Core Values created by owner, Mike Walker, but the real success happens when our instructors tailor these to your individual needs. You can expect to see skills uniquely delivered to each individual student within the group dynamic. Low student to instructor ratios allow us to teach our swimmers more effectively and the 100 plus hours of teacher training, everyone of our instructors has completed, becomes visible through dynamic yet clear coaching.

Our instructors go underwater with students! The only way to properly assess tension and relaxation levels is to actually watch and acknowledge them. We’ve found that students become more confident when the instructor is doing the skills with them. So, swimmers beware, instructors in the water!

What to Bring to Your Adult Swim Lesson

Two children are swimming near the edge of a pool. They are facing each other, one wearing a blue swim cap and goggles, the other in a green patterned swimsuit and purple goggles. Behind them is a wall with a colorful mosaic pattern.

Swim Suit

Swimmers must wear proper swim attire while in the pool. We advise you to wear swim attire that is comfortable but will not hinder your ability and range of motion in the water. We absolutely expect modest swimwear to respect all backgrounds. If you need to purchase appropriate swim wear, we offer for sale in our lobby Gold Medal Swim School Women’s one-piece suits and Men’s jammer swim trunks.

A swimmer wearing a red swim cap and black goggles swims in a pool. They are in motion, partially submerged, with their head above water. The background shows a colorful tiled wall in the pool area.

Goggles

We recommend goggles for our swimmers to establish ultimate comfort and relaxation in the water.

Goggles that cover the nose are not recommended and will inhibit the learning process.

Hair Tie and/or Swim Cap

If you have long hair (past your ears, as rule of thumb), it is important to keep it out of your face to ensure comfort underwater and allow for side-breathing technique. We recommend tying your hair back and/or using a swim cap so you will not be distracted and get the maximum benefit from your your lesson.

Two swimmers in a pool smile at the camera. Both are wearing swim caps and goggles. The person on the right is giving a peace sign with their fingers. The background shows a tiled wall in various colors.

Get Comfortable with Being Uncomfortable

Giving yourself the gift of consistent, year-round swimming improves your ability to be water-safe and allows you to develop a life-long love of the water.

We believe that consistent, weekly class attendance is one of the best ways you can contribute to your aquatic success. Breaks in weekly lessons can mean time spent catching up, rather than moving forward. Students who remain enrolled in perpetual swim classes progress in a more linear fashion.

It is also important to exercise patience, as sometimes our current abilities do not match up with our time frame and expectations. Always celebrate your accomplishments after each lesson.

Soap and Towel

If you would like, bring shampoo or body soap to rinse off after class in our shower area. Towel off and proceed to the dressing room, where you can use one of our stalls to change into dry clothes.
